I live on Crete having moved here from the smaller Greek island of Spetses. I'm a freelance writer and provide social media and website services to clients around the world. However, as much as I have tried to get involved in helping Greek tourism businesses to get online, they just don't seem particularly interested. It's pretty difficult here to get any kind of business up and running due to the prohibitive taxes and bureaucracy which is very off putting. My husband has a great idea for a tourist attraction here on Crete and getting any information in order to make some moves is proving difficult to say the least. Even the large Greek companies (like the bus companies) don't give enough information online for their websites to be useful. This means that the public transport service is not getting used as much as it should and is not seen as a viable means of transport by holidaymakers here. It's the same with many other businesses here - they use their FB pages to drive traffic to their online outlets and then (despite urging you to buy online) they have no purchase mechanism and you have to use the contact form to request a PDF brochure - I've moved on by then. I have several SEO agencies as clients, so I do know how to make the internet work for business, it's just businesses here are not particularly interested which is a shame as there is a desperate need for the economy here to be kickstarted.
